Blood Bank

The Indian Red Cross has been active in the arena of blood services from 1992. From a humble beginning of a blood donors club the blood bank services developed into a full-fledged state of art blood bank. In Chennai IRCS, Blood Bank is operational round the clock and collects nearly 12000 units a year. The blood bank has only voluntary blood donors and issues blood free of cost to Government hospitals and charges only Rs 500/- as service charges for others even though the NACO guidelines permit Rs.850/- per unit.

Save-a-Life Fund:

A Corpus Fund has been created in Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch where people donate Rs.2,000/- per head in the name of self/spouse or Corporate. This is a one-time payment. From out of this donation, the Red Cross Blood Bank will provide one unit of blood on a memorable day at the choice of the donor.
The Blood bank at Tamil Nadu State Branch has prepared the roadmap of increasing the voluntary donation by targeting the corporate and college students. With the presence of Youth Red Cross in all the colleges in the State, it proposes to motivate the youth to come forward and contribute their efforts in saving the life of others. Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch plans to upgrade and expand its blood transfusion service and to have training facilities of the highest standards, as per national guidelines. It also proposes to establish blood banks in the district branches and to start blood storage centers.

Day Care Hospital

M/s. Thatokonda Rajamannar Trust has been kind enough to donate the Day Hospital building to Indian Red Cross Society , Tamil Nadu Branch constructed at a cost of Rs.75 Lakhs to provide free medical services to poor and downtrodden people . In addition, the trust has also been kind enough to donate a sum of Rs. 50,000/- p.m. to meet the cost of medicines. With the above financial assistance the Indian Red Cross Society , Tamil Nadu Branch is able to cater to the medical needs of the poor and downtrodden in and around this area for the last 10 years .
Since inception of the Day Hospital, the Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch has been able to provide medical services free of cost to the most vulnerable people. On an average about 3000 patients per month are provided with medical services in various fields. The specialists area cover general medicine, ENT, Dental, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Psychiatric, ophthalmology etc. In addition, clinical facilities like Laboratory, X- Ray, Scan, ECG etc. also provided. The general public are satisfied about the medical services rendered by the Day Hospital.
Apart from this, our Mobile Medical Clinic goes periodically to the Srilankan refugees camps at Puzhal and Gummidipoondi near Chennai and render free medical services to them. In addition to this, the Medical Team visits the Crèches and render free medical services at Gummudipoondi, Puzhal and Injambakkam.

Family Welfare Centre

A Family Welfare Unit is functioning in Chintadripet, Chennai to promote family planning, nutritional care for mothers and children, immunization, personal hygiene and anti-natal assistance with the support of the Government of India.


In order to give relief to the poor working class and nursing mothers, Indian Red Cross Society is running 55 creches in various parts of Tamil Nadu with necessary staff members, to take care of children upto the age of 5. The children are provided with nutritious meals, regular medical check ups and educational requirements.
